We met as kids and grew up in the North East, spending much of our early years around computers. We played games, broke things and learned how software worked by pulling it apart. That shared beginning remains with us today. Practical, curious and rooted in where we started. Hence the name North Roots.
How we got here
Built on a long friendship.
We are both from the North East of England and have known each other for more than twenty years. The friendship started with hand built PCs, modded games and a shared curiosity about computers.
Tom brings deep expertise in systems, networks and security. Gareth brings product, AI and the strategic side of getting the right thing built. North Roots is where those two disciplines meet: practical engineering, clear thinking and long term ownership.

Strategist at heart, commercially minded. Gareth leads strategy, partnerships and product direction. He spends his time finding where AI returns the biggest result for the business and turning that into a plan we can ship. Hackathon winner, builder of agents and the one who keeps the work pointed at outcomes that matter.

Tom Johnson
Co-founder and CTO
Engineer at heart and security-minded by training, Tom brings years of experience and a track record of designing, developing and delivering robust systems for well-known brands. He owns the technical bar across full-stack delivery, security and reliability, ensuring business-critical platforms are built to perform when it matters.
